Chief Minister Pema Khandu Welcomes 100 New MBBS Students at TRIHMS, Announces Expansive Healthcare Initiatives

Naharlagun: Chief Minister Pema Khandu welcomed a new batch of 100 MBBS students to the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in what he described as a historic day for both the institution and Arunachal Pradesh. This academic year, TRIHMS doubled its intake from 50 to 100 seats, with 85 seats reserved for Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) students, a significant increase from previous years.

Reflecting on this milestone, Khandu emphasized the state’s commitment to expanding local medical education and healthcare opportunities. He announced plans for postgraduate courses (MD/MS) and super-specialty programs at TRIHMS, supported by a new 500-bed super-specialty block.

Addressing public health needs, Khandu highlighted a new partnership with Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute and the construction of a 200-bed Regional Cancer Center in Midpu to combat rising cancer rates. Additionally, a new Department of Renal Science and Kidney Transplantation is being developed at TRIHMS in collaboration with Sir Gangaram Hospital.

The state also plans to open three more medical colleges in the coming years to enhance healthcare education across Arunachal Pradesh. Health Minister Biyuram Wahge, Advisor Dr. Mahesh Chai, and other officials joined Khandu at the ceremony, marking a major step forward for the state’s medical infrastructure and healthcare accessibility.
